Government introduces compulsory cat microchipping to help reunite lost and stray pets
In England from 10 June 2024 it will be compulsory to have your cat microchipped from 20 weeks of age, but there is no minimum age to have your cat microchipped.
Under the new plans, all keepers must ensure their pet is microchipped before they reach the age of 20 weeks and their contact details stored and kept up to date in a pet microchipping database. Owners found not to have microchipped their cat will have 21 days to have one implanted or may face a fine of up to £500.
In addition, there is a campaign to make the scanning of microchips by veterinary surgeons and, in the case of cats found deceased on the road, by local councils compulsory. Many councils already do this, but it is not nationwide.
This law does not apply to feral cats who are usually ear-tipped prior to release after neutering. However, many feral cats are microchipped, particularly if relocated to farms and small holdings.
